The layoff announcements keep coming for San Francisco companies. In the past two weeks, another 9 firms announced they would trim their staffs, with most cutting 3% to 10% of their workforces.
Unity was the exception, laying off a full 35% of its team. The move cuts 284 employees from the SF-based game and software developer.
This week, Business Insider reported that Reddit was cutting staff. A spokesperson confirmed that though some employees were let go as part of the annual performance review process, no business-driven layoffs were taking place.
As of week's end, a total of 511 workers lost their jobs in San Francisco, a large number but a far cry from figures seen earlier in the month.
While execs often point to recent dampened customer demand and overhiring during the pandemic as the main reasons for job cuts, some national news outlets and analysts have begun to question the real reason behind huge headcount reductions, especially in Big Tech.
Though each company says profits are down, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon all reported quarterly profits in the billions but laid off thousands in recent weeks.
Details are starting to emerge on exactly how many Bay Area jobs will be lost in the worldwide cuts by Big Tech. Up first, a state report shows Amazon’s massive reduction of 18,000 will result in 104 positions lost in SF and 263 trimmed in Santa Clara County when they take effect in March.
Though Microsoft has not yet detailed its layoffs to the state, Google reported 575 job cuts in Santa Clara and 115 in San Mateo counties.
But Meta’s layoffs will hit Silicon Valley the hardest: 1,821 employees were laid off in San Mateo, 237 in Santa Clara, and 144 in Alameda counties, for a total of 2,202 Meta layoffs in the Bay Area out of the 11,000 announced in total.
