City Attorney David Chiu took issue with the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling Thursday limiting the power of the Environmental Protection Agency and the court’s recent decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade in a scathing press release issued this morning.
“I am sickened by the direction this Supreme Court is taking our country,” Chiu said in the release. “[A] majority of Justices have shown they do not care if women die without reproductive health care, if our streets are awash in deadly weapons, or if church and state are no longer separated.”
The city attorney added that, “Apparently, they also do not care if our human race has a habitable planet to live on in the coming years.” The ruling today in West Virginia v. EPA will curtail the agency’s ability to tamp down power plant emissions and is considered a huge setback to the climate change agenda.
“This Supreme Court is hell bent on turning back the clock and ignoring reality. Now, they have kneecapped the federal government’s ability to tackle climate change,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom tweeted Thursday morning.
Chiu reassured San Franciscans that his office would “continue to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for the damage they have caused.”
