Former Deputy Director of the San Francisco Rent Board Christina Varner has been named the board’s top executive, according to a press release.
Mayor London Breed’s office announced the appointment on Friday. Varner, a San Francisco native, has served as deputy director for six years, leading the department’s racial equity team. She has been acting director since late 2021, replacing Robert Collins, who retired.
“My work will stay consistent with the Rent Board’s mission, where I will strive daily to maintain equal and fair relationships between tenants and landlords, with a focus on racial equity,” Varner said in the release.
The Rent Board mediates conflicts between landlords and tenants and administers the San Francisco Rent Ordinance, a city law that dictates rent raises and evictions. Members are all appointed by the mayor.
