A 2.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Bay Area at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday night. An early report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake hit just under two miles from Piedmont in the East Bay.
Residents from Berkeley to Oyster Point reported feeling the jolt on Twitter. "Felt that in Berkeley- rumble and shake, maybe a new wall crack!" wrote one user. "Felt bigger than 2.9! And I live in SF," wrote another of the late-night earthquake.
A map provided by USGS showed the radius of the earthquake stretching to just past Walnut Creek to the east and to Angel Island to the west, with San Francisco neighborhoods from the Embarcadero through the Mission feeling the rattle and shake.
"Surprised it’s only 2.9. Felt it in the SoMa. A quick but hard jolt and saw plants and lights move," tweeted an SF resident shortly after the quake.
