Editorial Analyst / Data Journalist

SF Standard is seeking an editorial analyst/data journalist to join our news team. We are a startup company developing innovative approaches to delivering local news and information, serving everyone who has a stake in the future of San Francisco.

The editorial analyst will primarily be responsible for sourcing, creating, maintaining, and analyzing data sets and then synthesizing findings for our readers in the form of charts, articles, investigative reports and briefings.

The city—and therefore, the newsroom—moves fast! New topics and projects will arise every day, enabling the analyst to deliver both “deep dive” and “quick snapshots” on a broad variety of topics related to city life and public affairs.

The analyst will also work closely with other staff journalists to identify, monitor and report on the trends shaping policy, business and life in the city by conducting online searches, reviewing reports, accessing public records, and analyzing spreadsheets. Experience sourcing and tabulating relevant data sources will be core to this position. Key findings will be presented by creating charts, tables, maps, indicators, news stories and features.

The right candidate will have at least three years of experience as an analyst or data journalist  working with research on municipal budgets issues, market research or corporate finance and/or writing white papers, research reports, or policy briefings.

A four-year degree in journalism or an analytical field is ideal. Experience with SQL, R, Excel automation, data visualization, statistics, cartography, local government or public policy matters is a plus.

Must-haves for this position include, a keen attention-to-detail, numerical accuracy, excellent writing skills, an ability to work independently, an in-depth knowledge of San Francisco, and technical expertise with spreadsheets, WordPress, chart-making applications. Experience with SQL, R, Excel automation, data visualization, statistics, cartography, local government or public policy matters is a plus.

The role requires physical presence in San Francisco, and we expect to be a largely in-office company, Covid permitting. We offer very competitive salaries and excellent benefits.
