Neighborhood News Editor

The SF Standard is seeking an experienced editorial leader to help develop products and  services centered in each of San Francisco’s many neighborhoods. Covering the city at the neighborhood level presents many challenges and opportunities, and while we have some initial ideas on how this will work, we are looking to the Neighborhood News Editor to lead development. In broad terms, we expect the offering will include a mix of news, events and various sorts of reference information tailored to most or all of SF’s 36 neighborhoods, and we expect to deliver it with a combination of a small team of staffers, outside contributors and partnerships. Creativity and innovation will be crucial in the development of both the editorial offering and the distribution mechanisms.

The Neighborhood News Editor will have at least some familiarity with San Francisco, and deep knowledge of the city would be a major asset. Experience with editorial management, product development and/ or news startups would also be major assets. At least three years of full-time experience in journalism or a closely related field is required. Excellent writing and editing skills are also required. Leadership skills, good judgment and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders are essential. This position represents an opportunity for an ambitious journalist to help build an important new dimension of a next-generation local news organization.

The Standard is a startup newsroom and thus interested candidates must be comfortable with a demanding work environment. The Standard is an in-office company and thus physical presence in the Bay Area and willingness to work four days per week in an office are required. We pay good salaries commensurate with the cost of living in the Bay Area and we offer excellent benefits as well as stock options.
