Richard Aldrete, the brother of Oakland A’s first base coach Mike Aldrete and the father of San Francisco Giants prospect Carter Aldrete, was arrested in Monterey County on sexual assault charges.
Per the Monterey Herald, he was arraigned in Salinas on Tuesday, pleading not guilty to two charges of felony sexual penetration with a foreign object with a person under 18. Local news affiliate KSBW reported that Aldrete allegedly assaulted the victim multiple times when driving her home from practice. It is unspecified if he was coaching the victim as part of a team or giving individual lessons.
The Salinas Police Department received a report from a 21-year-old woman in October 2022, claiming that Aldrete assaulted her before she turned 18. A warrant for Richard’s arrest was issued on March 10, and bail was posted on April 13. His next hearing, a preliminary calendar call, is scheduled for April 19.
Aldrete was charged with two violations of Penal Code 289(h), sexual penetration by foreign object on a child under 18. The case has two special allegations: That the victim was particularly vulnerable, and that the defendant violated a position of trust in order to commit the crime.
The Aldrete family name is one of the most significant in Monterey County baseball. Richard graduated from Monterey High, played at Cal, was drafted by the Giants in 1987 and reached Triple-A in 1991, though he never received a call to the major leagues. He later spent five years as the head coach at Division II California State University Monterey Bay.
Richard’s brother, Mike, is in his ninth year on the A’s coaching staff. He also graduated from Monterey High, and was drafted by the Giants after playing at Stanford. He spent 11 seasons in the major leagues, playing with both the Giants and A’s, and was a bench player on the 1996 World Champion New York Yankees shortly before his retirement. On the A’s coaching staff, he’s held a variety of roles under managers Bob Melvin and Mark Kotsay and is currently serving as first base coach.
Carter, Richard’s son, graduated from Monterey High in 2016 and played three years at Arizona State. The Giants drafted him with the 446th overall pick during the 15th round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He opened the 2023 season at Double-A Richmond, where he has drawn four walks, doubled and homered in his first six games, good for a .909 on-base plus slugging (OPS). He was initially drafted in the 37th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2016, but declined to sign, instead choosing to attend college and play for the Sun Devils.
Monterey County court records show that Aldrete is being represented by Xavier George Nady, the father of former major league outfielder Xavier Nady. The best-known Nady, full name Xavier Clifford Nady VI, played at Salinas High and Cal before enjoying a 12-year MLB career, mainly spent with the San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates. Xavier Clifford Nady, now 44, has two World Series rings, one from 2009, when he spent seven games with the Yankees, and another from 2012 with San Francisco. He joined the Giants for the final month of the 2012, played in 19 regular season games and appeared in four of five National League Division Series games against the Cincinnati Reds. He was also on the roster for the National League Championship Series and World Series, but did not appear in any of those games. Nady’s official Cal Athletics bio describes him as “the most decorated player in Cal baseball history,” and he was enshrined in the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame.
