California Highway Patrol officers say a man in a military uniform climbed out of his vehicle and onto the ledge of the Bay Bridge Friday morning before being coaxed back over a railing to safety.
CHP responded to the section of the bridge near Treasure Island and closed two westbound I-80 lanes. Traffic was at a near standstill on the bridge after 9 a.m., according to multiple commuters who spoke to The Standard.
CHP officers received the report shortly 8:15 a.m. of a man seen outside a black Jeep with its hazard lights on and parked in the right lane.
Moments later, the man was seen sitting on the bridge edge. CHP officers alerted Coast Guard San Francisco crews and the San Francisco Fire Department, who worked to coordinate fireboat responses to the area.
There were no immediate reports of any injury, and the CHP lifted the alert around 9:20 a.m. when the man came back over a railing to safety. The Jeep was taken to a CHP office, where it was turned over to a family member.
A CHP officer said late Tuesday morning that the man would be taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for treatment.
