Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is adding daily nonstop routes from Oakland International Airport (OAK) to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) beginning May 5, the airline announced Thursday.

While Southwest Airlines has the overwhelming majority of passenger flights from Oakland, Spirit is the airport's second-largest carrier and will be the airport's only direct link to Dallas/Fort Worth, the second-busiest airport in the country.

JSX and Southwest offer service from Oakland to Dallas' second-largest airport, Love Field.

The OAK to DFW flight will be the only nonstop Spirit route from the Bay Area to Dallas for just a month. On June 7, Spirit is launching flights from San Jose International Airport (SJC) to three locations, including DFW.

While Spirit doesn't serve San Francisco International Airport (SFO), passengers can fly directly from SFO to DFW via American, Frontier and United Airlines. American, which is based in Fort Worth, is the only direct carrier from SJC to DFW until June 7.

DFW, located between its two namesake cities, is American's largest hub for both domestic and international flights. It serves roughly five times more passengers annually than Love Field, which is located on the northwest side of Dallas proper.

Spirit has been making headlines elsewhere recently as the airline could soon merge with JetBlue.
