The San Francisco Standard is seeking a versatile and experienced Senior News Editor to help manage our growing newsroom and drive coverage of politics, policy and current affairs. This is a senior assigning editor position whose primary duties will involve managing reporters, helping develop and approve story ideas, editing copy and helping create the tone and style of our report. This editor will handle a wide range of story types, including breaking news, data-led pieces, news features, analysis and investigative stories large and small.
The Senior News Editor will be part of the editorial leadership team, working closely with the Editor in Chief and others to establish coverage strategies, build topic-specific offerings in the policy and politics arena and identify and shepherd unique, high-impact stories. The Senior News Editor will also be involved in helping to develop fresh product approaches and distribution strategies to assure that our journalism reaches the widest possible audience.
The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of newsroom experience. Outstanding writing, editing and people skills are essential, as is some familiarity with the production side of online publishing. Previous experience as a manager or editor is preferred, but we may consider accomplished reporters who are ready for a different kind of role. Experience running large investigative projects would be a major asset.
Affinity for management is crucial, as this position involves supervising reporters with a wide range of skills and experience. The ability to work well in a high-pressure environment and the flexibility to adapt to the shifting needs of a startup are required. Deep knowledge of San Francisco politics would be a big plus, and even more limited knowledge of the city, and the state of California, would be an asset.
The Senior News Editor position is an opportunity for an ambitious journalist to play a central role in the creation of a new kind of metro news organization. We are an in-office company and thus the role requires physical presence in the San Francisco Bay Area. We offer very competitive salaries commensurate with the high cost of living, as well as excellent benefits and stock options.
