It depicts key local LGBTQ+ figures, such as Jose Sarria, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and Drollinger, and is painted in hues of blush red, burgundy and pink. The Oasis, of course, has a long and stories history as a hotspot for drag shows. State Senator Scott Weiner and Mayor London Breed are scheduled to make an appearance at the mural’s unveiling. Homophobes, he quips, are “the homeliest group of haters to come into fruition,” before adding that our 45th president looks like “lactose intolerance turned into a person.” Barbed social commentary is something of a specialty for Georgio, who, in a 2015 appearance on <em>Conan</em> explained how a North African—Georgio is Ethiopian—ended up with an Italian last name. “It’s a lot like a fairy tale,” he explains. “Except in this fairy tale there happens to be an Italian army occupation, a brutal civil war, a few decades of famine and no happy endings.” But he isn’t only concerned with putting bigots in their place and poking holes blinkered, Euro-centric worldviews. He also seeks to set the record straight when it comes to East Coast snobbery. “Here’s the thing,” he told the crowd during his 2019 set on HBO’s <em>2 Dope Queens</em>. Nobody in L.A. makes fun of anyone in New York… because we’re too busy enjoying our lives.” (NV)

A plan to create a new team to respond to homelessness-related concerns received a stamp of approval at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, but details on how it would integrate with existing city services are murky.

The proposal, dubbed the Compassionate Alternative Response Team (CART) and put forth by a group of advocates called the CART Coalition, seeks to reroute low-priority complaints from the San Francisco Police Department to its proposed team of 52 workers. The group estimates that the plan will cost about $6.8 million dollars to build and operate the response teams, who would receive training and earn annual compensation of $90,000 per employee.

The Department of Emergency Management says that between 911, 311 and the police non-emergency line, the city processed more than 65,000 calls deemed homelessness-related in 2019. It fielded more than 26,000 total trespassing calls and 23,000 suspicious person calls, many of which are homelessness-related.

San Francisco has seen its homeless population <a href="https://sfgov.org/scorecards/safety-net/homeless-population">rise steadily</a> over the past decade, from approximately 5,400 individuals in 2011 to 8,000 in 2019, an increase of 67 percent according to the city’s biennial counts. State data points to a <a href="https://www.publiccommentsf.com/post/more-than-10-000-people-sought-homeless-services-in-sf-last-year-a-40-jump-over-2019">surge in homelessness</a> during the COVID pandemic.

We want all of our outreach teams to be working together to field requests as they come in and conduct proactive outreach.”

In the wake of the Gold Rush, an enterprising German Jewish immigrant named Levi Strauss ripped thick denim fabric from sails or tents and dyed it blue, fashioning the very first pair of jeans for hard-working gold miners.&nbsp;

The first pair of riveted jeans were white, not blue, and they were made from a fabric called “duck” that a tailor named Jacob Davis had purchased from San Francisco wholesaler Levi Strauss. Davis, who was working in Reno, was not outfitting gold miners, but a laborer who had come to Nevada because a major deposit of silver ore had been discovered on the other side of the state.
