It’s an unfortunate title intended to troll for Tucker Carlson’s fans, and, in fact, the book is published by a division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, which owns Fox News. Promotion for San Fransicko compares it to literary greats like, uh, Kentucky’s Senator Rand Paul.

Shellenberger’s central conceit is hard to dismiss: San Francisco is a wealthy city with an unrivaled concentration of brilliant minds, and yet we are failing on so many levels: schools are in crisis, the deadly misery of drug addiction is rampant, street crime is a plague, and a shameful number of people, many mentally ill, are unhoused and live in filth and danger on our streets.&nbsp;

Last April, when Supervisor Gordon Mar <a href="https://twitter.com/D4GordonMar/status/1247938537678233600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1247938537678233600%7Ctwgr%5E&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsanfrancisco.cbslocal.com%2F2020%2F04%2F09%2Fgreat-highway-close-to-cars-shelter-in-place-supervisor-gordon-mar%2F" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a> the Upper Great Highway&#8217;s temporary closure to cars (which spans from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard) he intended to mitigate the impact of sand on the roadway to oncoming vehicles. The Upper Great Highway closure is nothing new. In pre-Covid times, it closed on average <a href="https://sfrichmondreview.com/2020/12/06/sunset-residents-debate-best-use-of-upper-great-highway/#:~:text=It%20was%20noted%20by%20officials,along%20Ocean%20Beach%20for%20decades." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">at least 27 times every year</a> for cleanups.&nbsp;

There’s climate change where sea level will rise—which we’ll have to deal with—and then biodiversity and habitat. The current Great Highway configuration doesn&#8217;t leave a lot of room for nature, so not rethinking it might mean you end up with a seawall on the highway and no beach dunes. That would feel like a disaster because it would destroy our coastline, and all the qualities that people and critters come here for, which is to experience the beach.”

UPDATE: Since publication, SFMTA, SFCTA, Supervisor Mar and other stakeholders have <a href="https://www.sfmta.com/press-releases/comprehensive-great-highway-traffic-calming-strategy-announced-outer-sunset" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a> a strategic plan for traffic calming measures around the Lower Great Highway, including 24 new speed cushions, one speed table, six new changeable message signs to help move traffic away from residential streets to thoroughfares like Sunset Boulevard and 12 new stop signs along the Lower Great Highway, La Playa Street, Irving Street, 48th Avenue, 47th Avenue and 46th Avenue. Implementation is expected to start in March and be completed by the end of April.
