Oakland Police Department homicide detectives are investigating a Monday robbery that led to the death of beloved baker Jen Angel, police said Friday.

Angel was hospitalized in critical condition after she chased a suspect who had robbed her while she sat in her car in Downtown Oakland. Her clothes apparently snagged in the suspect's car door, and she was "dragged more than 50 feet before falling free in the middle of the street," according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Angel's death was confirmed by friends on Thursday.

"The victim unfortunately succumbed to their injuries," an Oakland police spokesperson said. "Investigators from the OPD Homicide Section have now taken over the case."

Angel was a social justice activist and founder of popular bakery Angel Cakes.

A friend of Angel's organized a GoFundMe to assist in medical expenses and financial support for her family. In announcing Angel's death, loved ones stated that if an arrest was made, her family is "committed to pursuing all available alternatives to traditional prosecution, such as restorative justice."
