Bridge repairs will close southbound Highway 101 lanes from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, creating traffic chaos for weekend travel between San Francisco, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and the South Bay.

Caltrans engineers will replace the 1930s Cordilleras Creek bridge with a single-span bridge that is expected to allow for increased water and fish flows. The current bridge has reached the end of its lifespan, officials said.

SFO has asked travelers to allow for extra time to get to the airport over the weekend.

The work will require traffic to be rerouted between the highway's exits at Brittan and Whipple avenues along Industrial Way in Redwood City.

Northbound Highway 101 lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. Oct. 13 through 5 a.m. Oct. 16 for further replacement works.

Drivers headed toward South Bay destinations should take detours along Highway 92 over the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge, Interstate 880 and Highway 84 over the Dumbarton Bridge between Newark and Menlo Park, or along Interstate 280 and Highway 85.
