A 35-year-old man was detained by several San Franciscans after he stabbed a 74-year-old man during an attempted car break-in on Friday, police say.

In a statement Monday, police said officers responded around 5:08 p.m. to Chestnut and Webster streets in the Marina District for a reported stabbing.

When officers arrived, they found witnesses who said a group of people were holding a man on the ground at Bay and Webster streets. Officers soon took the man into custody.

Officers soon learned that the man had allegedly been breaking into a parked car and was still inside it when its owner returned and began a physical confrontation with him.

In the ensuing fracas, the vehicle’s owner received what police called a non-life-threatening injury but managed to chase the fleeing suspect, drawing witnesses’ attention and assistance, police said.

After both men were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries, the attacker, identified as Mohamad Jafaripour, was arrested and booked into jail on an active warrant out of San Francisco.

Jafaripour was also booked on suspicion of burglary, burglary involving a present victim, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, vandalism, petty theft and unlawful possession of tear gas.

Jafaripour remained in jail Monday according to the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office inmate locator.
