A second pedestrian has been killed in San Francisco this year after being hit by a car at 16th and Valencia streets in the Mission.

Much of the Mission, including 16th and Valencia, is listed on the city’s High-Injury Corridor, the areas of the city where the most traffic injuries and deaths occur.

The San Francisco Police Department responded to reports of a traffic collision just before 6 p.m. Tuesday to find a pedestrian with life-threatening injuries, who died at the scene, according to police.

SFPD says the driver remained on the scene and did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The death marks the second traffic death so far this year. The total number of traffic deaths for 2022 was 37, making it the deadliest year for traffic deaths since the city adopted its Vision Zero policy in 2014, according to Walk San Francisco.

Walk SF recently called on the city to do more to end deadly crashes, saying it has fallen behind on street safety projects promised in 2021.

“Many streets are far too dangerous, especially for pedestrians,” wrote Jodie Medeiros, executive director of Walk SF. “And the city isn’t doing nearly enough to address the threat we all face. Where is the urgency?”
