A passenger was shot in the chin early Saturday morning when someone fired a gun at a car driving onto an Oakland freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire at 4:07 a.m. near the 11th Street onramp to Interstate 980, authorities said.

Investigators said two people were in a white Lexus on the 11th Street onramp when a bullet pierced the car and lodged in a passenger's chin.

The driver took the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment, the highway patrol added. It is unclear what condition the victim is in at this time.

The East Bay has seen a disproportionate number of freeway shootings in the last three years, according to CHP data examined by The Standard.

From 2020 to 2023, Alameda County, which includes Oakland, saw more deadly highway shootings than any other county in California, with 11 people killed in those three years.
