An hours-long early morning standoff with a gunman who hid under a parked SUV ended Sunday after the armed man surrendered to police.

Police said they responded around 5:35 a.m. to Brannan Street between Seventh and Eighth streets and found a man with a gun, who fled, firing at least one shot as he ran. Soon after, officers found the gunman hiding under a nearby vehicle.

Members of the SFPD tactical and hostage negotiations teams were called to talk to the gunman, as Fire Department paramedics stood by.

At 10:20 a.m., the man finally surrendered without incident.

Authorities said the blocked-off streets near the intersection were expected to reopen within an hour.
