San Francisco hammer attack: Man jailed on suspicion of attempted murder

San Francisco police arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after they say he struck someone with a hammer during an argument in the city's Tenderloin neighborhood.

Officers responded around 8:45 a.m. Thursday to reports of the attack on Ellis Street, where they found the victim wounded and rendered aid before paramedics arrived, police said.

Witnesses told police the victim had been in a verbal dispute with the suspect, who hit him with a hammer and then fled.

Around 12:15 p.m., officers located the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Christopher Redinger, by Ellis and Hyde streets and detained him.

Redinger was arrested on charges of attempted murder and a probation violation and booked into San Francisco jail. He could face additional charges as the investigation continues.
