The FOG Design + Art Fair has returned to its Fort Mason home, bringing with it creative and innovative works from local and even international galleries. With 45 exhibitors to explore and four days worth of programming, take the opportunity to indulge in some new artistic inspiration.

2. Joan Brown Jump and Swim

Members of the historic South End Rowing Club and Dolphin Club are taking a chilly swim from Fort Mason to Aquatic Park this weekend, and you can head over Saturday morning to cheer them on. The brave swimmers are commemorating the life and impact of Joan Brown, an Olympic-trained swimmer and fan of open-water jaunts in the Bay. Brown successfully sued the South End Rowing Club, the Ariel Club and the Dolphin Club for not allowing female members, and later became a member of the South End Rowing Club herself. And don’t worry, you aren’t expected to join this icy plunge—there are hot beverages for spectators to enjoy.

3. A Royal Walk With the King Tide

This weekend marks the perfect alignment of the sun, moon and frigid winter weather, meaning it’s time for the annual King Tide, or exceptionally high tides, which usually occurs once or twice during the winter months. The Exploratorium, using the bay as its exhibit, is hosting a gathering on the Embarcadero to view the King Tide in all its royal glory. Learn about how this astronomical phenomenon works and how it could be insight into what sea level rise could mean for “normal” high tides.

4. Light Up the Night Bike Parade

Bikes, roller skates, strollers and any other wheels imaginable are welcome to this community nighttime ride to light up Golden Gate Park’s JFK Promenade. There will be a limited supply of complementary bike lights courtesy of REI. Don’t be afraid to really have fun making your wheels shine because there will even be prizes for standout riders’ light setups.

5. Chinese New Year Celebration & Choy Sun Doe

This event in Chinatown’s Portsmouth Square welcomes the New Year celebration with thousands of “lai sees,” or red envelopes filled with chocolate coins, money or vouchers for attending children. Individuals representing Choy Sun, the Chinese god of wealth, will be there handing out as many red envelopes as possible to spread prosperity and abundant wealth—the thought is the more lai sees you pass out, the more good luck will return to you.
