Accused Muni Bus Hijacker Faces Multiple Felony Counts

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins filed multiple charges Wednesday against a man who allegedly assaulted a Muni driver and hijacked a bus before hitting several cars and leaping out of the the still-moving vehicle.

Rickey Dancy stands accused of attempted carjacking, felony carjacking, grand theft auto, taking a vehicle without consent, two counts of vandalism and two counts of hit-and-run. That's in addition to six counts of misdemeanor hit-and-run and misdemeanor driving without a license.

San Francisco police say the hijacking unfolded Friday evening. Officers responded to a Muni emergency alert on Cortland Avenue and Mission Street, where they said they found the stranded bus driver. Passengers left before Dancy drove off, they said.

Additional officers then found the bus driving near Mission and 18th streets.

“A vehicle pursuit ensued while the driver drove recklessly and struck multiple vehicles,” said the statement.

After the suspect jumped out of the moving bus, officers chased him to 19th and Guerrero, where they detained him after a physical struggle. 

Cops summoned medics, who drove the suspect to the hospital as a precaution, SFPD says.

Officers said they eventually boarded the moving bus and brought it to a stop at 18th and Guerrero before it barreled into oncoming traffic.

Hospitalization delayed Dancy's arraignment, which is now set for Thursday. Prosecutors want to keep Dancy in jail as he awaits trial because they say he poses a danger to the public.
