A man suspected of assaulting a 78-year-old woman in the Mission District last month will stand trial on multiple felony charges, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said Monday.

Steven Briar, 47, has been in custody since his arrest on Feb. 10, when he allegedly kicked a woman's cane out from under her while she was walking to work.

The kick caused the woman to fall on her face, resulting in injuries that required three stitches, said the district attorney's office.

Briar faces felony charges related to elder abuse, assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury and battery. He also is charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly resisting arrest. If convicted for all charges, he faces up to 21 years in state prison.

"Attacks on elderly and vulnerable people are completely unacceptable," said Jenkins. "Everyone should be able to walk around freely without fear of being attacked while going to work, especially our seniors. We will seek justice for this victim and ensure that there are consequences in this case."

The case remains an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with more information is encouraged to call the San Francisco Police tip line at (415)575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.
