University of California academic student workers and graduate student researchers officially ended the six-week strike on Friday that had caused disruptions across the system.
The strike included four different groups of workers, each with their own set of grievances largely tied to wages and benefits. The coalition was represented by the United Auto Workers union.
Under the newly ratified contract, which will go into effect immediately and will be in place through May 31, 2025, minimum pay would be increased to about $34,000, and workers will be entitled to more health and child care benefits, among other conditions.
The strike kicked off on Nov. 14, with academic workers citing unfair practices by UC during the contract bargaining process.
At its peak, the strike included nearly 50,000 academic workers across the 10 universities and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
