With two stages and thousands of revelers, Sunday’s party in Downtown Oakland is far more than just a parade.

“It’s been a long journey, and I’m incredibly honored by the trust the voters have placed in me,” said Oakland’s mayor-elect in a statement.

The carnival is the latest idea from officials to revitalize the city’s downtown areas that struggle with crime and drug use.

The measure was the third failed attempt to remove statewide limits on rent control since 2017.
