Slayings in Oakland are up this year compared with last year after four people were killed in shootings during a violent weekend, police said at a news conference Monday.

Seventeen people have been killed so far this year compared with 16 at this time last year, Deputy Police Chief Drennon Lindsey said.

Gunfire erupted just after 7:45 p.m. Friday in the 7200 block of International Boulevard where two people shot another person multiple times, according to a preliminary police investigation. The shooters got away in a waiting vehicle, Lindsey said.

The victim died at the scene.

About an hour later officers heard shots being fired two blocks away in the 7000 block of International Boulevard, Lindsey said. There, officers found a victim inside a vehicle. That person also died at the scene, Lindsey said.

Less than two hours later, officers responded to the 2400 block of 67th Avenue where another person was shot to death. Police have detained one person in that shooting, police said.

The fourth victim was killed in a shooting Saturday morning in the 700 block of Webster Street, Lindsey said. The shooting occurred just after 1:15 a.m., she said.

Officers detained two people of interest in that case, Lindsey said. The victim died at a hospital.

Another shooting just before midnight on Friday left a person in critical condition. The shooting occurred in the 8400 block of International Boulevard.

A Vallejo resident is in stable condition at a hospital following a shooting in the 7800 block of Bancroft Avenue.

Lindsey said police believe the shootings are isolated events. She said police have solved 50% of the killings this year. Six cases have been charged by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, she said.

Police are not releasing the names of the victims yet.
