A new bowling complex with Japanese roots is coming to the Stonestown Galleria mall, according to planning documents.

The complex will be a new Round1 Bowling & Arcade location, which has over 50 bowling centers across the U.S., including establishments in Hayward and San Jose.

Round1 opened its first location in Japan in 1993 and has 100 stores in the country as of 2021. On its website, Round1 touts its "variety of fun-filled activities and exclusive arcade machines from Japan."

The Round1 complex will take over the old Nordstrom store at the location which shuttered in 2019.

Round1 offers bowling and arcade games with Japanese entertainment sensibilities.

A manager at a regional Round1 store said the Stonestown Galleria location is tentatively slated to open in early 2024. The San Francisco store was expected to open earlier but ran into supply chain issues, as Round1 gets much of its supplies delivered from Japan, the manager added.

Based on planning documents, the complex will include 12 bowling alleys with booth seating for players. Other amenities include a dining area, two "party rooms," a room for pool and a separate bar area.

"We can confirm that Round1 will be joining our shopping center and that we are looking forward to the new addition," a spokesperson for Brookfield Properties, Stonestown mall's operator said. "We know our community will enjoy the concept and that they will complement our existing tenant mix. Round1 will be located in the lower level of the Target (former Nordstrom) anchor building."
