Okaeri Japanese Bistro, an omakase-style sushi bar, is about to debut in the Mission.
The Japanese restaurant soft-opened this month with limited dinner hours, and owner Cameron Chan told The Standard that Okaeri will host a grand opening in early January.
Okaeri set up shop at 3515 20th St. between Mission and San Carlos streets. The space was previously home to Yoji Sushi, which now operates in Forest Hill.
The bistro centers on an omakase experience, or a chef’s selection of sushi. This traditional style of Japanese dining has exploded across San Francisco over the past few years with help from upscale sushi bars like Ju-Ni in NoPa, Ken in the Lower Haight and Chef Jackson Yu’s 18-course concept in SoMa—simply called Omakase. Unlike some of these omakase-only spots, Okaeri also offers à la carte nigiri, sashimi, tempura, skewers and hot pot.
“We’re excited to be able to share our vision of contemporary Japanese cuisine and showcase our chefs’ skills to the Mission,” Chan said.
