A Muni bus driver was attacked with a fire extinguisher during a carjacking on Wednesday at around 9 p.m., police said.

San Francisco police officers assigned to Bayview Station responded to the area of Cesar Chavez Street and Evans Avenue on a report of a carjacking of a Muni bus.

The driver told officers that he was stopped at a red light when the suspect approached the Muni bus and jumped through the driver’s side window and demanded the victim drive.

While the victim attempted to gain control of his bus, a physical altercation ensued between them, and the suspect sprayed the victim with the fire extinguisher.

The suspect was medically assessed at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation. Police say the suspect is in custody, and the case remains open.

Officers immediately gave aid to the bus driver and summoned medics to the scene. The bus driver had non-life-threatening injuries, for which he was treated and released by medics.

The latest hijacking of a Muni bus comes after one was joyridden through city streets in November 2022.
