Progressive activist and former state Senate candidate Jackie Fielder on Friday announced her run for San Francisco’s District 9 Supervisor seat, representing the Mission, Bernal Heights and part of the Portola neighborhood.
Positioning herself as a champion for economic recovery, Fielder is aiming to succeed current Supervisor Hillary Ronen, who will complete her second term in November 2024.
“I am running for supervisor because District 9 and the city of San Francisco need economic recovery from the bottom up, not the top down,” Fielder said in a press release.
The Mission, in particular, has struggled with issues such as illegal street vending, drug dealing and homelessness. Fielder said she would pursue investments in affordable housing, mental health care and addiction recovery.
An Indigenous and Latina organizer from Long Beach, Fielder is part of a movement of young, progressive Democratic politicians who believe in taking power away from corporations.
Fielder co-founded the San Francisco Public Bank Coalition, co-managed a campaign fighting a San Francisco Police Department use-of-force policy and currently serves as the co-director of Stop the Money Pipeline.
Fielder will be running against Ronen’s legislative aide Santiago Lerma as well as three other candidates, including Michael Petrelis, former Citizen app employee Trevor Chandler and Harold Brown. The other candidates did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
