A man died of a possible drug overdose Friday night at a Downtown San Francisco BART station, according to officials.

Authorities responded to the possible overdose shortly before midnight on the platform of Civic Center Station and tried to revive the man, a BART spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said authorities found drug paraphernalia around the man and that no foul play is suspected.

Two witnesses reported the apparent overdose on Twitter.

One person described the person as a young man and said they had to protect the body while the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene.

“He was a young fellow too,” the Twitter user said. “Someone’s mother will be grieving.”

Another poster said they saw someone overdose and die on the platform.

“This is awful!” they wrote. “Something needs to be done about the craziness here in the Tenderloin!”

The incident spurred BART to take one of its platforms out of service at Civic Center Station at around 11:43 p.m. and send trains on one track from 24th Street Mission Station to Embarcadero Station, according to an alert from the agency.

San Francisco recorded 268 accidental overdose deaths in the first four months of 2023—a 37% increase over the prior year, according to preliminary data from the medical examiner’s office. Of those deaths, 211 involved fentanyl.

The medical examiner’s office has not released the name of the person who died at the BART Station Friday.
