Major U.S. tech companies continue to lay off staff as a result of financial belt-tightening and company closures.
Bakersfield company Bitwise Industries announced it would shut down and lay off 900 workers in the San Joaquin Valley town. According to Bakersfield.com, the crypto firm had received $150 million in capital since it was founded in 2013.
Hardware makers are experiencing the pinch. Lower demand pushed Qualcomm, Sonos and Western Digital to eliminate hundreds of positions in recent weeks.
Demand for food delivery is also on the decline. Chicago-based GrubHub announced 400 layoffs and Uber’s Cornershop grocery delivery subsidiary will reduce its headcount by 11%, or approximately 250 positions.
In San Francisco, a state report revealed that the planned closure of Nordstrom in Union Square’s Westfield mall will result in the loss of 379 jobs.

Challenges continue in the software and gaming sectors, pushing SF-based Unity, Zendesk, HashiCorp and Kabam to cut more than 1,200 positions in total.
Since the start of May, the 15 companies in the table below have announced plans to cut 4,844 positions. The 10 firms located in the San Francisco Bay Area accounted for more than 2,600 of these layoffs.
