Popcorn season is in full swing! Cinephiles love the weeks between New Year’s and Academy Award night (Sunday, March 12) when both blockbuster and critically acclaimed films hit the big screen, the weather can be iffy and there’s not much else on the calendar (because Dry January.)
Today’s announcement of the 10 nominees for the Best Picture Oscar—from Top Gun: Maverick to Triangle of Sadness to Women Talking to All Quiet on the Western Front—plus the five contenders for each of the actress, actor and director awards means there’s a screening for everyone on a marquee around the city.
And though many historic theaters have been hit by the wrecking ball (including the Alexandria this week), San Francisco still has 13 cinemas that play first-run movies.
A look at the calendar shows that the Alamo Draft House in the Mission, the Balboa in the Richmond and the Westfield San Francisco Centre multiplex on Market are the cinemas with the most nominees on tap for this weekend.
