Scott Wiener took a big step toward pursuing a run for the congressional seat currently held by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as the state senator for San Francisco has formed an exploratory committee.

"Speaker Emerita Pelosi is one of the most effective and transformational leaders we’ve ever had," Wiener said in a statement to The Standard. "I am and will continue to be grateful to have her as my representative in Congress for as long as she is willing to serve."

He added, "I’m exploring my options for a potential Congressional run in the event she decides to step down. It’s a privilege to serve our community as State Senator, and I look forward to continuing to work day and night for the people of San Francisco."

Following last November's election, Pelosi announced that she would give up her leadership role but intended to remain in Congress after Republicans gained control of the House. She has yet to announce whether she will seek another term after 2024.

Wiener is considered one of several likely contenders to succeed Pelosi in the event she retires. Other challengers who have been weighing a run include Pelosi's daughter, Christine, who has served as national Democratic Party official. Jane Kim, a former supervisor and current director of the progressive Working Families Party, also is considering a run in the event Pelosi exits Congress.

The primary for Pelosi's congressional seat is in March of next year, and any candidates will need to officially declare by this coming December.
