Union Square is losing yet another retailer, with clothing store Express slated to close its doors on Oct. 22, according to signage posted in the entryway.
A manager at the store confirmed the closure date but would not share further information or their name because they are not authorized to speak with press.
The Union Square store is running a 60% sale storewide, according to signs posted inside. Customers can also visit their Stonestown Galleria location, which will be the sole San Francisco store after the closure.
A sign on the side of the building at 301 Geary St. Tuesday said the retailer is proud to be part of a “historic location” with “rich tradition.”
Express CEO Tim Baxter told SFGATE the company is undergoing a cost-reduction strategy.
“We are conducting a comprehensive review of our business model to identify actions that we believe will meaningfully reduce pre-tax costs and enable a more efficient and effective organization,” CEO Tim Baxter said in the statement. “Today, we are announcing a goal to deliver $150 million in annualized expense reductions by 2025 versus 2022 and have already identified and implemented $80 million for 2023 and $120 million for 2024.”
Express, which opened its doors in Union Square a decade ago, deals heavily in business wear for young adults, including men’s suits.
The clothing store is one of several to leave the area recently, including Nordstrom, Uniqlo and Old Navy.
Nearly half of Union Square retailers opened before the pandemic shut down by May.
