Procrastinators of California, rejoice! For the third time this year, the Internal Revenue Service has given almost every taxpayer in the state an extension on their 2022 federal income taxes.
In January, the typical April 15 deadline was pushed back one month, to May 15. The California Franchise Tax Board, the state’s tax-collecting agency, followed suit immediately. Then, in February, both the state and federal governments gave filers in more than 40 California counties another five-month extension, to Oct. 16.
Monday was officially the filing deadline—but as of this morning, the IRS has granted California taxpayers a third extension, this time to Nov. 16. It applies to everywhere in the state apart from three far northern counties (Shasta, Modoc and Lassen).
“IRS relief is based on three different FEMA disaster declarations covering severe winter storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides over a period of several months,” the agency’s release said.
On Monday night, the California Franchise Tax Board announced that it had also pushed its filing deadline for most Californians to Nov. 16.
