San Francisco Western Addition shooting: 1 dead, 1 injured

One person died and another was wounded Thursday afternoon in a shooting in San Francisco's Western Addition neighborhood, police said.

Officers responding to reports of gunshots around 3:15 p.m. found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds near Golden Gate Avenue and Buchanan Street.

One victim died at a hospital despite life-saving efforts, police said. The other victim was transported to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Authorities did not immediately release information on the deceased victim or details about a possible suspect or motive.

There were 168 violent crime reports in the Western Addition neighborhood in the 12 months before Oct. 21, 2023, compared with 174 during the same period ending in October 2022, according to police incident data analyzed by The Standard. There were reported 161 violent crimes reported in the same period ending in 2019.

Citywide, the number of reported violent crimes has decreased this year since pre-pandemic 2019, from 60 to 57 incidents per 10,000 residents.
