A Caltrain struck and killed a person in San Mateo on Thursday, causing delays along the commuter rail system.

The collision was reported at 11:28 a.m. near the system’s Hayward Park Station. Transit and local police, alongside San Mateo city firefighters and other first responders, arrived within minutes to find a person suffering from injuries.

Despite emergency life-saving measures, the person was declared dead at the scene around 11:40 a.m. An identity was not immediately available from the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office.

Caltrain staff closed the station’s northbound platform while trains boarded on the southbound platform there and at Hillsdale Station. The collision caused delays on several other trains; however, within a couple hours, service was returning to normal, Caltrain said.
