Despite ending last summer's inaugural Blue Note Jazz Festival on a low note, telling the crowd assembled at a Napa winery that he would "never drink a cup of wine from this dusty ass field" again if the musical performance couldn't continue past curfew, comedian Dave Chappelle will indeed return for the event's second season.
The festival will take place July 28-30 at a new location, the Silverado Resort in Napa and, as it did last year, will feature musician Robert Glasper. The full lineup will be announced in March, according to the festival's website. The news of Chappelle's return this year was first reported by SFGATE.
The comedian is no stranger to controversy generally and seems to court it—perhaps particularly during his Bay Area visits. During a show at the Chase Center in December, Chappelle invited Elon Musk to the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world," Chappelle said by way of introduction, eliciting a few hoots and hollers that quickly transformed into a wall of jeers as the Twitter CEO took the stage.
The dust-up at last year's Blue Note Jazz Festival occurred after Chappelle, who was emceeing the event, demanded that the performance go on despite a noise ordinance that went into effect at 10 p.m.
"Napa Valley, forgive us for disrespecting your noise ordinance,” Chappelle said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s not noise. This is the best that America has to offer in music."
