San Francisco's Church of 8 Wheels—a roller rink in a former church in the Lower Haight—is hosting a pop-up skate night to mark the return of the Portola electronic music festival.

The Portola Skate Night, which will run from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16, is an 18-and-up event.

The party is on-brand for the Church of 8 Wheels—an organization founded by run by San Francisco's Godfather of Skate, David Miles, who has been a beloved fixture of the city and the wider Bay Area for over 40 years. His deep-seated love for roller skating has seen him sweep down the steps inside City Hall, skate from San Francisco to Los Angeles more than 15 times for charity and create safe spaces for communal skating all over the city.

In addition to more charitable and community-oriented projects—like a decadeslong campaign to make JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park permanently car-free—Miles and his congregation have also brought mobile roller rinks to other electronic dance music parties, including Burning Man and the Electric Daisy Carnival.

Attendees at Tuesday's event will have a chance to win tickets to the second year of the Portola Music Festival.
