So much for the first day of spring! Winds from Tuesday’s storm overturned a big rig on the Bay Bridge, sent a barge crashing into the Lefty O’Doul Bridge and blew out skyscraper windows across the Financial District. Tragically, five people were killed, including two in San Francisco.
Beyond that loss of life, the most visible and widespread impact was the downed trees. Some 700 trees and major limbs came down in all, including in some exceptionally inconvenient places for anyone who tried to drive home during the evening commute, like Lombard Street. The Tenderloin, Alamo Square, the Mission, the Haight—trunks crushed vehicles and blocked streets throughout the city.
