Shots rang out in San Francisco’s Mission District Monday night, in what amounted to the area’s second shooting in four days.
Individuals in two cars exchanged gunfire on Alabama Street between Precita Avenue and Cesar Chavez Street along the border of Bernal Heights shortly before 8 p.m., multiple bystanders told The Standard.
No injuries were reported, although bullets struck two houses and two parked cars.
An officer with the San Francisco Police Department on the scene stated that there appeared to be multiple shooters, but declined to provide additional details.
The Standard was later able to confirm with the department that both assailants were men, and each fled from the scene in different cars.
A resident of one of the houses, who declined to give his name, told The Standard that a bullet had passed through multiple walls and a closet before lodging in a painting hanging in his residence. When the shooting erupted, the resident grabbed his girlfriend and hit the ground, he said.
Another neighbor, whose house was not struck, said that he and his children sheltered on the floor after the shooting began.
Monday’s exchange of gunfire occurred in a neighborhood already rattled by gun-related violence. On Friday evening, nine people were injured when a shooter opened fire on a block party near 24th Street and Treat Avenue. Only a day later, three more people were injured in a separate shooting outside a nightclub near Balboa Park.
After Friday night’s shooting, a silver Mercedes-Benz was captured on surveillance video speeding away from the scene, and witnesses on Monday described a gray Mercedes at the scene. It was unclear if the two vehicles were the same.
According to police, the person of interest in the shooting on Friday is a member of the Sureño gang who targeted an area historically controlled by the Norteño gang.
