Ann Hsu stands to lose her San Francisco school board seat as a challenger overtook her for the third and final spot in the latest round of election returns Monday night.

Special education advocate Alida Fisher overtook the mayoral appointee by 1,700 votes on Monday in the San Francisco Unified School District board race, according to the city’s election department.

Fisher finished election night about 9,000 votes behind Hsu. But the gap only narrowed over the ensuing days with each new round of returns.

Fisher said that she’s still waiting for all the ballots to be counted before providing a comment. Hsu couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Hsu made a name for herself in the high-profile school board recall this past year and was ultimately appointed by Mayor London Breed to replace the ousted commissioners.

During her campaign to maintain the seat, however, Hsu sparked controversy by making comments that stereotyped struggling Black and Brown students, prompting several local officials and political groups to urge her to resign.

About 38,000 ballots have yet to be counted. The next round of results will be released at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
