In a hotly contested race for California's 17th Assembly District, Mayor London Breed endorsed District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney on Tuesday.
In a statement, Breed cited Haney's experience leading a city budget committee during the Covid-19 pandemic. Haney chaired the Board of Supervisors' Budget and Finance Committee last year.
“I appreciate that as Budget Chair, Matt stepped up to work with me during extremely challenging times during the pandemic to craft a balanced budget that delivers the services and priorities our city needs,” said Breed.
Haney has racked up endorsements from a swath of labor unions and state and local officials. Those endorsements include Attorney General Rob Bonta, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, SEIU California, Board of Supervisors President Shamann Walton and others.
Early voting opened in the race, which pits Haney against former supervisor David Campos, on March 21. Polls are set to close on April 19.
Campos, meanwhile, has earned endorsements from a bevy of current and former elected officials, including several members of the Board of Supervisors, former Mayor Willie Brown and others. Various labor unions and other organizations, including the California Nurses Association and United Educators of San Francisco, also endorsed Campos.
In a February primary election, Haney edged out Campos as the top vote getter among four initial candidates with 36% of votes to Campos' 35%. Former candidates Bilal Mahmood and Thea Selby came in with 22% and 5% of votes, respectively.
