Supervisor Ahsha Safaí, who represents the Excelsior neighborhood on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, has filed paperwork to run against Mayor London Breed in 2024.
Safaí revealed in an exclusive interview with The Standard in March that he was considering challenging Breed in next year's election. Safaí filed papers with the city's Department of Elections on Monday, appearing to make the challenge official.
"The city right now is in crisis, and I’m having a lot of people—on a daily basis—talk about the future of the city,” Safaí told The Standard in March. “Are we headed in the right direction? I think overwhelmingly people are saying, ‘No, we’re not.’”
Safaí is the highest-profile challenger to Breed's reelection so far, though multiple polls in recent weeks have sent rumors flying that others could jump into the race. It's unknown who commissioned the polls, but they appeared to test voter sentiment on Assemblymember Phil Ting, entrepreneur Daniel Lurie and a handful of other prospective candidates for mayor.
Breed set up a campaign committee last year and had raised almost $165,000 by the end of last year.
