San Francisco police released a photo of a “person of interest” in the shooting on a Muni train Wednesday morning that killed a man and left another hospitalized.

SFPD said officers responded at 9:56 a.m. to a report of a shooting at the Forest Hill Muni station. When police arrived, the train had already left the station. Officers followed the train to the Castro station, where they found two victims on a Muni train.

Police said that one victim, a 70-year-old man, was transported to General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The second victim, a 27-year-old man, died on the scene despite an attempt by firefighters to save him.

Authorities described the suspect, who has yet to be found, as a man wearing dark clothing and a hooded jacket. “The SFPD is releasing a still photo of the video, which is an image of a person of interest,” police tweeted late Wednesday evening, along with the images. The SFPD is asking this person to come forward and speak with them.

Investigators said this incident appears to be isolated and not related to Pride festivities or targeting the LGBTQ+ community.

Supervisor Myrna Melgar told The Chronicle that the suspected shooter and another man were in a heated dispute prior to the gunfire. She said the shooter shot the man he was arguing with and the second victim was not involved in the dispute.

Police ask anyone with information about what happened to call the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text TIP411.

On Twitter, state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, condemned the shooting.

“Until we reduce easy access to guns in this country,” he wrote, “these horrific tragedies will continue.”
