Three car crashes on Interstate-80 in El Cerrito involving between six to eight vehicles in total have caused a serious backup extending into San Pablo, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP received two reports of crashes between 5:50 a.m. and 6 a.m., which all occurred in the same area of westbound I-80 just before Carlson Boulevard.

Currently, the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane and the slow lane are blocked, with the two middle lanes open to traffic, according to the CHP. A Nissan Altima in the HOV lane is immobilized from the crash and needs to be towed away. The other vehicles were moved to the right shoulder, which is blocking the slow lane.

The CHP said officers suspect one or two vehicles involved in the crashes struck vehicles before fleeing the scene, and they are currently investigating.

One person involved in the collisions reported a possible injury, the CHP Said.

All lanes are expected to be open in the next 45 minutes.
