An unusual opportunity to live in the rarefied air of one of the city’s most exclusive neighborhoods has just come on the market.
A mansion at 23 Presidio Terrace—located in the extremely affluent gated community just south of the Presidio—has come on the market at a $17.9 million list price. The 40 properties in the tony cul-de-sac have been home to current and former occupants, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and the British consulate.
The Edwardian-style estate was built in 1910 and originally designed by San Francisco architect Julius Krafft. The seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom property spans 9,504 square feet of livable space across four stories.
The sellers of the property, Gretchen and Lee Hansen, made their fortune in the technology industry. Gretchen Hansen works as an investor and previously sold her startup Decorist to Bed Bath & Beyond in 2017. Lee Hansen currently serves as the chief financial officer for San Francisco cryptocurrency exchange Uphold Inc.
The Hansens purchased the property in 2012 for $5.85 million and embarked on a major renovation that included a seismic upgrade and raising ceilings.
“When I first walked in and saw that the front door was raised to its maximum height, I knew I was in for something special, and I was not disappointed,” said Neal Ward, a broker with Compass and the property’s listing agent.
Amenities on the property include a large, open-floor-plan kitchen, a library with a wraparound bookshelf and an outdoor terrace with a hot tub. The garden level includes a guest suite, wine cellar, steam room and sauna, laundry room and gym.
The property also contains six separate fireplaces, as well as an integrated security camera network and a built-in sound system.
The property is coming to the market as ultra-luxury home sales in San Francisco have taken a dip amid high interest rates and what some brokers have termed a “consumer confidence” problem in the city.
