San Francisco welcomed the world in November, hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit that drew world leaders, tens of thousands of protesters, celebrities and CEOs.
As the global media spotlight was trained on the city, security barriers went up, homeless people said they were forced to move from the streets, businesses scrambled because of the disruptions and the Bay Bridge was shut down by demonstrators, snarling morning commutes.
Locals packed the streets for Día de los Muertos celebrations and demonstrations against violence in the Middle East, and thousands of people got up before dawn to travel to Alcatraz for a ceremonial tradition for Indigenous people on Thanksgiving Day.
A giant “No Dancing” sign went up in Golden Gate Park, and not everyone was happy. A ban on street vending was imposed in part of the Mission, and not everyone was happy. Skate ramps came to U.N. Plaza, and skaters were happy.
