UPDATE, 5 a.m. Monday: According to his own Twitter users, Elon Musk should step down as head of the social media platform.
More than 57% of the 17 million responses to the poll agreed he should bring his brief, chaotic reign to a close. Whether he abides by the results remains to be seen.
Should I stay or should I go? Elon Musk is asking the public if he should step down as head of Twitter.
After being spotted at the World Cup final in Qatar, Musk posted a poll on Sunday afternoon asking if he should remain CEO of Twitter.
“I will abide by the results of this poll,” Musk said in a Tweet on Sunday.
Musk and Twitter have had an eventful few months since he took over as owner and CEO of the company in October, from reinstating Donald Trump’s Twitter account after conducting a similar poll to getting booed at Dave Chappelle’s comedy show in San Francisco in December.
The Twitter CEO faced backlash on Friday after the company suspended the accounts of several journalists and again on Sunday when the company announced that it would not allow users to link to other social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Mastodon on Twitter.
While some users wished Musk a hearty goodbye, others worried about who he’d hire as his replacement if he actually stepped down.
“As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it,” Musk Tweeted shortly after posting the poll, which had over 10 million votes on Sunday night.
