Gun found at San Francisco middle school after student altercation

San Francisco police and firefighters responded Thursday to a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a Muni bus near Van Ness Avenue and O'Farrell Street.

San Francisco police say they found a gun at a John Denman Middle School after an altercation between two students.

The school district confirmed the incident happened at the middle school at around 2:30 p.m.

Officers responded at approximately 12:23 p.m. Wednesday to the Balboa Park school after a report of a possible shooting and an active shooter inside of the school.  

Officers arrived on scene and determined there was no merit to the report a shooting or an active shooter situation, a police spokesperson said.

The initial investigation revealed there was an altercation between two students, during which a firearm was located by a school staff member. 

"Officers located and seized the firearm on scene," the spokesperson said. "At this time, there are no reports of injuries. The students involved have been detained, and the officers remain on scene conducting an investigation."

This afternoon there was an incident at Denman Middle School involving a report of a weapon on campus. The weapon was never discharged and no one was injured. Police are investigating and the campus is secure. Families have been notified by the school directly, and the school is providing supports to students as needed.

"Denman, and all SFUSD schools, have a comprehensive safety plan in the event of an emergency. We are very glad that everyone is safe."
